UP/1B Calculator app - Job Summary screen
The old way vs the right way.
📋

Without UP/1B Calculator

  • Manually flipping through IGEM/UP/1B pages on a job
  • Calculating permissible pressure drops by hand
  • Relying on memory for test durations and stabilisation periods
  • Risk of using Edition 3 figures after the March 2026 update
  • No documented audit trail if a result is ever questioned
  • Time wasted — and more room for costly error

With UP/1B Calculator

  • Guided step-by-step procedure — nothing missed
  • Live calculations with instant pass/fail result
  • Correct Edition 4 figures, always up to date
  • Works offline on site, syncs results to the cloud
  • Exportable result summary for your certificate
  • Done in minutes. Documented. Defensible.
Everything you need on a job. Nothing you don't.

What changed in March 2026.

IGEM/UP/1B Edition 4 was published in March 2026 and supersedes Edition 3. It's the current standard for tightness testing and purging of domestic and small commercial gas installations in the UK, and all Gas Safe engineers are expected to work to it.

If you're still using Edition 3 figures or memory from your initial training, there's a good chance something has changed. UP/1B Calculator implements Edition 4 in full — so you don't have to track it yourself.

New

Caravans & Light Agricultural Vehicles

Edition 4 extends scope to include caravans and LAVs for the first time, with dedicated test procedures and pressure limits.

Updated

Revised Two-Stage Test Logic

Clarifications to Stage 1 and Stage 2 permissible pressure drop thresholds and how let-by is assessed against installation volume.

Updated

LPG-Air & LPG Procedures

Updated working pressure references and test pressure calculations for LPG and LPG-Air installations.

Updated

Purging Volumes & Sequencing

Refined guidance on purge volumes for different installation sizes and appliance types, covering direct and indirect purging sequences.

New

Documentation Requirements

Strengthened requirements for recording and retaining test results — reinforcing the need for a documented audit trail on every job.

Built on Edition 4. Kept up to date.

Every calculation, permissible pressure drop, stabilisation period, and purging sequence inside UP/1B Calculator is based on the current IGEM/UP/1B Edition 4 standard — the authoritative procedure for tightness testing and purging of domestic and small commercial gas installations in the UK.

Decades of real-world authority.

UP/1B Calculator wasn't built by software developers guessing at gas procedures. It was developed in close collaboration with industry-leading gas engineering experts with decades of hands-on experience in the field.

Our technical team includes professionals who spent over two decades as senior Gas Safe inspectors — working directly on the standards, procedures, and compliance frameworks that govern the industry. The same knowledge that shaped IGEM/UP/1B is built into every step of this app.

When the app tells you a result is satisfactory, you can be confident it's because someone who helped write the rules says so.

No other software company in this space has access to this level of gas industry expertise. That's not a claim — it's a fact. UP/1B Calculator is in a class of its own.

Common questions.
Is the app up to date with the latest IGEM/UP/1B standard?
+
Yes. UP/1B Calculator is built specifically on IGEM/UP/1B Edition 4 — published March 2026. All pressure drop thresholds, stabilisation periods, and purging volumes reflect Edition 4 requirements. If the standard is updated, the app will be too.
Does it work without an internet connection?
+
The app is offline-first — all calculations and procedures run entirely on-device, so you're never dependent on a signal on site. When you do have a connection, your results and settings sync automatically to the cloud, keeping everything backed up and available across your devices.
Is this suitable for commercial jobs, or only domestic?
+
UP/1B Calculator covers both domestic and small commercial gas installations. You select the installation type at the start of each procedure, and the app applies the correct volume thresholds and test parameters accordingly.
Can I use the results as part of a gas safety certificate?
+
The app produces an exportable results summary showing the procedure followed, readings taken, and the pass/fail outcome. This is designed to be attached to your certificate or retained as part of your job record. You remain responsible for completing your certificate in accordance with your registration body's requirements.
Is this a one-off payment or a subscription?
+
One-off, always. You pay £7.99 once and own the app outright. There are no recurring charges, no in-app purchases, and no premium tiers. All future updates — including any Edition 5 revisions when they arrive — are included at no extra cost.
I'm an Android user — when is it available?
+
Yes — UP/1B Calculator is available on both iOS (App Store) and Android (Google Play) at launch. Same price, same features on both platforms.
Does the app replace my knowledge of the standard?
+
No — and it's not designed to. UP/1B Calculator helps qualified gas engineers apply the standard accurately and consistently on the job. It's not a substitute for Gas Safe registration, proper training, or your professional judgement.
